Lovely writing, characterization, setting, and there’s so much depth to the characters even though the story is simple. I loved the descriptions of Alaska and homesteading in the 1920s, and the way Jack and Mabel struggle and adapt to their new home. I’m not sure the way Faina evolves with the passage of time made as much sense to me as the ways Jack and Mabel grow and evolve, but that’s just my impression right after finishing. I’ll sit with it and see if it comes together a bit more.

The Snow Child is an intimate and intricately tale of grief, of belonging, and of the varying notions of family. Inspired by its namesake in the Russian fairytale, the novel seamlessly blends fantastical ideas with extremely human circumstance, all while providing the reader in-and-out with a close-up look at the Alaskan landscape and lifestyle. While it felt a little unevenly paced, especially at the back half of the book, the story certainly is gripping and inviting to any reader who gives Jack and Mabel a place in their heart.

It was well written, with good characters. But at the same time it was very sad, and still leaves you with a ton of questions.

The story talked about the childless old couple who lived in Alaska. It was slow but in a good way because they showed us their little life.

the story is good. It talks about grieving, how they cope up with it, and their healing. However, I’m quite taken a back at Garrett’s part because I didn’t really expect that haha. Also, it’s so mysterious and I love how the questions were all answered at the last part.

Overall, it was a peaceful and quiet read for me. It made me want to also live in the woods, away from city and create my own little cabin.
