The quote that comes to mind is from Yiyun Li's When Reasons End:
"Would you call it a tragedy? he said.
I would only say it's sad. It's so sad I have no other adjectives left."
So sad, I have no other adjectives left. Yet don't let this keep you from reading A Day in the Life of Abed Salama. There is a reason the book won a Pulitzer for General Nonfiction. The title is slightly misleading; expanded from a previous article written by Thrall, the book is not just about a single day. Instead, it investigates the Israeli–Palestinian conflict over generations, and the way many, many political choices over time that ultimately shaped a tragedy on this one day.
Nathan Thrall writes with journalistic integrity. The writing is (in my opinion) objective, well researched, and thoughtfully written. I learned so much about the history of the region, the peoples, and the conflict.
