My daughter and her friends started a book club and this was their first pick. She absolutely loved the book, me, not so much. I'm trying to read all the classics I missed as a kid, and I'm finding with each one that classics are just not for me. I heard Kate DiCamillo speak last week, and she told us that she didn't read Charlotte's Web until she was 20 because she read Black Beauty as a child and vowed to never read another book with animals in it. It wasn't so dramatic for me, but I found it to be quite slow moving. I'm glad my daughter had glowing praise.

This is one of those "classics" that persists i think on vaguely fond childhood memories and the admittedly noble job it did to raise awareness of the humane treatment of animals. But have you reread it as an adult? Clunky, ponderous and sounds like it was written by a particularly earnest middle-schooler.

Picked this book up thinking I'm in for an easy read, only to find myself tearing up as I am reading the last chapter four hours after I started the first.
"If we see cruelty or wrong that we have the power to stop and yet do nothing, we make ourselves sharers in the guilt."
