One of my favorite children’s books of all time. What a lesson for all of us.

While this picture book is not for young children, I think it should be a must read for children in grades 5 and up. Even adults will be touched by this story about a soldier, who is in a hole, shooting at the enemy every day, wanting to kill the enemy before the enemy kills him. He knows the enemy is not a human being because his manual told him that. However, one day he sneaks out and winds up in the enemy's hole and finds photographs of the enemy's family and the enemy's manual, which is just like his, except in that manual, the enemy has his face. The story and illustrations are simple, but the message is powerful. I highly recommend this book.

Read for 5420 class

Picture storybook

A really great picture book that showcases how those we think/are told are our enemy are actually more similar to us than the conditioners would have us believe.

Loved it. Absolutely loved it. I read it three times in Persian, French and English in the same day, and it was so poignant that it haunted me.
It is so simple, so minimal, so straightforward yet so very powerful. It sends a very important message that children need to be exposed to, but I think adults are in dire need of reading it as well. This will an all time favorite of mine.
