So I decided to read this book because I had recently read, "Happy Birthday Wanda June" which is Kurt Vonnegut's rebuttal to the manly-man archetype in Ernst Hemingway novels. Although I think Vonnegut was playing more off of Hemingway's public persona than his actual books. Still i had only read one of Hemingway's works and that was back in early university (and I have no memory of it), so I decided to read what many call his seminal work. Plus it was super short.
Being a massive Vonnegut fan, I expected the worst, thinking the main character was going to be as awful as Harold Ryan from "Wanda June". I was very pleasantly surprised. I enjoyed The Old Man and the Sea. I appreciated what it said about man versus nature, and all of our struggles to overcome adversity. Maybe removed from the context of Hemingway's persona, I was able to enjoy it. I wound up grabbing an eBook that has all of Hemingway's books, so I plan to read some more.

This was my second attempt at a Hemingway book and I did like this one. I tried to read "The Sun Also Rises" and gave up fairly quickly. I was actually quite amazed that the same writer wrote both books. I may attempt another in the future.
