One of the best books that I’ve read in a long time! I read it in Feb of 2020. If you are the fan of historical fiction, read this now! This books tells the beautiful story of people/a couple from the basque region of Spain at the start of WWII who move to South America. The story ends in present day. It is a complete tale with great character development! I felt a wide range of emotions along side the characters. My heart was satisfied but sad when I was done reading.

Despite being such a well known author, I’d never even heard of Isabel Allende before a friend recommended this book. Although not something I’d otherwise have been drawn to, I found Allende's reputation well deserved. Her writing is concise, and the story moves at a good pace, but that doesn’t stop the characters being well drawn and believable, and the places and events they experience being vividly brought to life by Allende's descriptions.

I’m not totally sure, though, that the spreading of the story over so long a time period in a comparatively short book works completely. Inevitably you get a focus on what’s happening in a short period of time, then many years pass almost unremarked and with little of significance occurring, which seems unrealistic. Still, an enjoyable book.

I thoroughly enjoyed this book. I didn't know much about the Spanish War nor the political history of Chile over the past 50 years. Allende's research and telling of the political parties and events in this story was well done. The story tells of a family from Spain, forced to flee to Chile and how they adapted to the culture and political climates over the years.

Jeez rip my heart out!!! I listened to the audiobook and it’s one of the only ones to ever keep my full attention. For such a long book that’s saying something. The narrator is incredible!

Isabel Allende tells a good story and this historical fiction novel set during the Spanish Civil War and the exodus of refuges to South America is the best part of the book.
