This was like reading a fever dream. So much happened and at the same time nothing happened. The first 100 pages were brilliant and then everything just went downhill from there.
You could 100% tell this was meant to be an introduction to this universe and all these characters as there was way too many of them to get my head around. A lot of them appear very briefly, just to be killed.
All the jumping between the Nihil, avar and Elzar and loden and Bell was a bit much but I understand why it needed to happen. The last 20 or so pages of this was pretty solid and I really liked the epilogue. This book reminded me of legends which a nice bit of nostalgia.

This book was really fun, with a sense of humor that I really loved (for example, the little bit about Jedi romance novels made me laughed and also I would love to read one of those) balanced with a lot of the soap-y high drama action. I liked this generation of Jedi a whole lot (especially Bell and Loden). The Nihil are kind of meh as villains, but it is nice to see the Jedi fight a threat that isn't Ultimate Evil Incarnate. A nice little romp and I look forward to the next installment.

WOW! Loved this new introduction to the world of Star Wars set way before all the canon we already know about. It's such a unique way to expand and learn so much about the Jedi!

This book is an introduction in many ways to the High Republic project(saga?). The first third of the book jumps around introducing characters that do not make it past those pages and ones we see throughout the book. The second and third are more cohesive storyline with many open possibilities for the rest of the books and comics to come.

Minor: Torture

I enjoyed this as a good entry point to the greater High Republic story. It covers the state of the galaxy, the imminent threat, and the balance of power, as well as introducing us to many exciting new characters. The first third of the book is particularly exciting, a true disaster movie rendered in prose. The frenetic pace has a drawback, though: I never felt as though we spent enough time with most of the characters to really get to love them -- and several that I thought I might get there with then died!
