The first half of this book looks at different groups' responses to a collision (natural?) disaster that leaves fragments speeding through space, and causing mass destruction. It was devastating, and I was not expecting to start off this prequel series with so much loss, dang! That was rough. I found it fascinating once the Jedi realized there were also people onboard some of these fragments, so they began rescue missions for these now refugees. All life is precious, and you could feel the sadness each time a life was lost.

There are a LOT of points of view in this book (all told in third-person), which was hard for me to follow at times (not a book problem, moreso a me problem because the majority of books I read have two POVs or less).

However, I do think it set up the galaxy quite well, and introduced political and interpersonal dynamics that inform the zeitgeist of the time. The world-building was so much fun, and why I love first books in series. I will be continuing the series, and really love this new journey I'm on (in the High Republic lol).

My only criticism of this book is that sometimes the organization felt weird to me. For some reason, the passage of time in this book felt very weird to me after the first part, like I couldn't quite tell how fast things were happening because of how the book moved between three different places. It follows an investigation, the villains, and a rescue attempt, and for some reason the time during which all three of these were happening was a bit fuzzy to me. That might just be a me thing though, because that is a detail I miss in books sometimes. I just felt like it was more prominent in this one. However, that is the only issue I had with the book. As a huge star wars fan, I've been meaning to get into the high republic for a very long time, but never really made the time to do it. With The Acolyte coming out I figured that was my sign to finally begin, and I am so glad I did! I loved the characters introduced and thought the villains were incredibly compelling. I am very excited to learn more about them. Bell was definitely a standout character to me, and was absolutely my favorite. If you're a huge star wars fan, I would highly recommend this, because it's a look at a very different Republic and Jedi Order than what we know in the prequels, and it's very interesting to compare and contrast. I'm super excited to continue diving into this era of star wars soon!

Holy crap, this was a roller coaster!

This book starts by throwing you right into the Great Hyperspace Disaster. I was very curious about it was, having read a lot about it on different Star Wars internet sources. I'm still just starting making my way through the High Republic books, and I picked this up because it's one of the like 5 books we have on that era at the library. I was not disappointed.

I have only read one other High Republic book so far, but I believe this one is the basis for most of the other novels set in that time. It's not the first chronologically (I don't think), but definitely the first people should read in my opinion to fully grasp how the Disaster affected the galaxy, and the rise of the Nihil.

There's a swift change in pace from part 1 to part 2, and a lot of characters to keep track of, but there was enough to keep me engaged to the very end. The Nihil are my kind of villain, and I cannot wait to see what they're up to next
(especially Marchion Ro...)

I am loving the High Republic era so far. Definitely a step in the right direction from Disney/Lucasfilm to expend the world in that direction instead of the mess we got as a sequel trilogy. (Can you imagine if we'd had the Great Hyperspace Disaster and the rise of the Nihil movies? 😩 )
