I was already having a pretty good time with this just following Su Yang and Gu Feidi and then the previous generation's drama was unveiled and I fear I am now obsessed with Su Huaizhu.
Wish we got to see more of the barely there lesbian side couple at the end.

I tried reading this novel 3 (three) times!!! I can't do it, I'm sorry- despite the great reviews, I picked up this book 3 times and I couldn't finish it 3 times. The first time I dropped this book (ch 10) because I felt the plot was complex and deserved more energy and focus than I had. The second time I dropped this book (ch 20) because it was really wuxia heavy and I was more in the mood to read something modern and political. The third (and final) time I dropped this book (ch 52), I had completed finished vol 1 half heartedly and hoped vol 2 would pick up the pace; however, I ended up dropping it after a revelation. I want to say that this novel is well written and I can see what the author is trying to do. This novel is just not for me. Characterization and relationships are important to me and although the characters are not unlikable, they feel... dull? Flat? 2D? I keep reading moments in the novel that normally would make me feel emotional, but something about the delivery or how the characters react make certain moments of the book feel like simple motions. I feel completely bored and despite the admittedly interesting mystery the novel presents, I can't keep myself reading a novel where the characters bore me with their thoughts and actions.
