I loved that this book felt like a refreshing escape from the normal structure and narrative that many fiction books follow.
Spoiler I was surprised by most of the book, and deeply appreciated that the magic of this universe was both fantastical and simple, both logical and inexplicable. I found myself confused about the storyline/losing focus frequently throughout the book, which normally would bother me, but it felt like I was experiencing the same thing as the narrator LOL, which I enjoyed. I found the narrator’s genuinely kind soul very touching and deeply enjoyed the process of discovering what had happened. I didn’t realize it was a mystery novel until halfway through which is awesome. The well-established isolated world meant that, with the appearance of each new person or information, it was genuinely shocking. Very interesting and refreshing read.
Also, I pictured The Other as Brett Goldstein.

i wish we'd get more in certain parts of the story. more backstory maybe, more time in the other world. but apart from that, this story was right up my alley

This book is a novel length version of this richard siken quote "Eventually something you love is going to be taken away. And then you will fall to the floor crying. And then, however much later, it is finally happening to you: you’re falling to the floor crying thinking, “I am falling to the floor crying,” but there’s an element of the ridiculous to it — you knew it would happen and, even worse, while you’re on the floor crying you look at the place where the wall meets the floor and you realize you didn’t paint it very well."

It is also a story about a silly little guy in a massive house.

I liked the book but I didn’t like the beginning. It took me until 28% to be interested in it. It took me a while and tbh still was hard to read Piranesi’s rambles at times. But the mystery was good and kept me hooked and interested in wanting to learn more. I liked how conflict and mystery was handled and balanced. I also liked Piranesi as a character!
