This book reminds me of Starling Days in that there’s no real plot. It’s more of a character study though, admittedly, I’m not entirely sure if this counts as a character study since there’s no grand revelation or character growth for any of the characters.
All of that sounds bad, but I did in fact thoroughly enjoy this book. Hallie Butler has a literary voice that is both casual and accessible without coming across as amateurish or lazy. She’s also good at writing dialogue which cannot be said about a lot of other writers for some reason. The fact that everyone had flaws really helped to make everyone feel more human and made it easier to envision them.
