Maisie is a bit too good to be true — a beautiful and universally beloved ace of a detective and psychologist and clairvoyant — but this was a well done detective story, set as usual in the 1920s. It evokes the period very well and I enjoyed it.

I still can't quite decide if I like this series! The plotting is decent enough, I'm just not sure about the central character. It's interesting how she treads the class divide though, coming from a background as a housemaid to a point where the servants now call her ma'am.
I reckon I'll pick up the 3rd in the series but not a must-read.

A better mystery than the first. This is making me much more interested in the first world war.

This was another enjoyable gentle mystery listen. And not only was it a mystery, but it gave insight into some of the issues men and women alike experienced post WWI, probing the different relationships portrayed. Maisie Dobbs was also a pioneer in the area of women detectives, and it accurately portrayed gender role biases at that time. I love that Jacqueline Winspear adds so much more to the story than it just being a whodunit.

Think I liked this better than the first. Maisie is really coming into her own.
