This was a powerful read but potentially triggering to many.

This book definitely should have come with a trigger warning, as I'm someone who struggles with body image issues and ED. However, Mona Awad does a fantastic job at pulling back the curtain on the truth of battling negative body image and self-preception. It is all-consuming, day in and day out.

Reading about Lizzie's story is a bit of a wake up call to be gentler with myself and also illuminated the harsh reality of how the world views women in larger bodies.

This was a fairly quick read given that this book consists of 13 snapshots of Elizabeth/Lizzie/Beth, starting as a teenager through to adulthood, rather than a continuous story per se. It was quite a challenging read though, although I imagine it was fully intended to be, since the vast majority of the book deals with Lizzie's deeply ingrained self-disgust, fat-phobia, disordered eating, and insecurities, and her perpetual desire to be thinner.
This book won't be to everyone's tastes certainly but it does a good job on highlighting how easily self-control can become obsession and the personal costs that can lead to.
