CW: Eating disorders, fat phobia, bullying, grooming, self harm
The beginning of 13 Ways of Looking At A Fat Girl shot off like a rocket for me. It was emotional, intense, and gritty. It took me right back to being a teenager and feeling SO UNCOMFORTABLE in my body.
I loved seeing Lizzie grow and mature quickly through the years, instead of a traditional slow-burn book that covers both childhood and adulthood. Because this book is only 13 chapters, it was like getting short glimpses into each stage of her life. Personally, the beginning was much more interesting and intense. The middle and end kinda slogged on, but I still enjoyed it.
I could easily see why Awad received an Honorable Mention in the 2017 Arab American Book Awards.
