Like all alien invasion stories, this is an allegory for colonialism, but for young adult dystopian fans. Fast paced yet reflective. Centered on several teens in the aftermath of a global genocide. It has all the tropes of teen dystopian stories like The Hunger Games and Divergent, but didn't get the same hype.

Not 5 stars because
the colonizing, sort-of love interest disappears before the audience or the main character can focus too much on his casual acceptance of genocide before he meets her. "I went along with it begrudgingly until I fell in love with you" should be examined a bit more, just saying.

I eat apocalypse books up and this book was a feast
  • Cassie is such a good protagonist: she’s fierce, smart, driven, but ultimately just like every other girl
  • I sooo called
Evan being a Silencer. Also the name Silencer is pretty cool
  • Cassie cutting her hair when she gets feelings for a boy… she’s so me
(okay yes I know it was to make her look younger hush)
  • what an amazing book. I think the viewpoints were juggled perfectly
  • the camp being bad… like we saw it coming but STILL

The pov changes felt excessive at times and it took me a while to get into Ben's pov but I ultimately did enjoy this book.
That being said, I did guess almost every single plot twist.
