Much like the characters in this book, my own grandparents lived in a trailer while my grandpa built their new house. It takes a village to build a house and this book perfectly honors all that hard work.

Hipsters - or post-hipsters if you want to split hairs - move from their Hampden rowhouse to a field outside of Monkton and build a house, two toddlers in tow and a bun in the oven. Does mom wear glasses? Does dad wear plaid? Is their jeep a vintage Willys, are their shoes extra-chunky? Does a cat lurk on the periphery?

Do not hold any of these things against them.

Loved this book, especially the illustrations. I could see someone who is fascinated with building get lost in this book. Loved the step by step illustrations and descriptions. The author included a note in the back explaining how the story is loosely based on his family's experiences.

Love the illustrations, the texture of the pages, the attention to house-building detail and the storyline. And considering house-renos made up our little girl's first year of life, it hits close to home. I also liked the real photographs at the end, illustrating how this is a non-fiction story.

Charming illustrations enhance this fictionalized memoir of the author's childhood home.

Rereading this for Thom's picture book illustration class makes me love it even more. I love the large format of the book and small format of many of the sections of pages; the evolution of the house and the narrator, and the mother's pregnancy. What isn't to love about this brilliant, wonderful story?

This is a sweet book about a family moving to the countryside and building their own house over the course of time.
