This author tried to wring my heart, but failed to get me to care about the characters, most of whom have suffered horrible injustices and died horrible deaths by page 100. I get it: feudal Spain was an awful place to be; I'd rather read an essay on the topic.

I thought the description of this book was really different. Unless I missed something, there was never any indication of Mar being Jewish. And though Joan was involved in his trial, he wasn't really the accuser. But as a story, I really enjoyed it. And kudos to Netflix because their show really followed the book almost to the letter. You really get a sense of the hustle and bustle of Medieval Barcelona through the eyes of these dynamic characters. I loved most of these characters, and even could feel some sympathy for the King's ward, though definitely not enough. I loved Mar's zeal, Arnau's gentleness, Zahat's general devotion, even Aledis' boldness.'
