Definitely a solid 3.
This book was ok.
I liked it but the jumping from one scenery to the next was all over the place. I was confused half the time, but I did like it when Zach gave her the "I'm telling you, I love you" speech. It was so adorable.
The other thing I didn't like were the plot holes. Like where did grandma leave to? What happened to the snake? I would have thought he would show up at the end to try to stop the resurrection, but he didn't. I also didn't get too emotional when Zach seemed to be dead because it felt predictable that she would succeed in the resurrection.
I also didn't really care for the last chapter. It could have been done without. I get that the author might want to make a series but that chapter didn't seem enticing enough to make me want to read the next book.

It seems like I either read a bad book or I devour one and it ends up being a 5 star read, and If I Have to Be Haunted was the latter. I've been so excited to read this since I first heard about it, and when I was kindly gifted a proof from the folks over at Magpie books/HarperVoyager, it took everything in me to not drop the proofs I was reading at the time to pick this one up instead. It was the perfect book to start off my autumn reads as we get closer to the colder seasons (ignoring the fact that we're currently experiencing the most random heatwave in the first week and a bit of September).
I loved everything about this book, from the sort of rivalry/childhood nemesis to lovers slowburn that miranda oh so wonderfully wove throughout the novel, as well as some PJO easter eggs that were surprising yet very welcome (as someone who has been obsessed with that world and series for almost my entire life). I had thought that there was going to be a lot of magic coming into play here as the main objective for our main character Cara, was to bring Zach back from the dead. What I hadn't expected was the incredible world that Miranda created and the ways death and the afterlife is explored and regarded in this book. It was honestly such a pleasure to read and with that ending, I'm hoping/assuming we will be getting a very exciting sequel. I had some theories regarding the ghost talker that was mentioned throughout the book and how that links to the last few chapters and the epilogue.
The romance that we got in the form of a slowburn was so well written, it had me giggling at all their interactions and kicking my feet with joy. I honestly have to say it's one of the best slowburns I've read in YA in quite a while (accompanied by Lynn Painter's Better Than The Movies). There is no way that you can read Cara and Zach's interactions without smiling and wanting to smush them together. I found the way Miranda explored the relationship between Cara and her mother and grandmother very interesting, especially as someone who grew up with my grandma and my mum (and my grandmum's sister) as my mothers. I completely understood their dynamics and the ways in which each of them interacted with the others was very interesting. I hope we get to see more of that as well as Cara's mother and grandma's backstories. This book is very clearly Cara's book so it made sense that we only got a little peak as to why theI cannot wait to read what Miranda writes next, I know I'm going to love it, with the way I obsessed over her spectacular debut.
