I'll admit, I went back and forth between hating and loving this book. I loved some of the descriptions regarding the emotions the characters went through, the beautifully described nature, and many of the stories regarding Anne are fun. On the other hand, there are parts where the characters just talk about how great Anne is (or how horrible she is), Anne herself can get a little frustrating to read, and after reading about Maya Angelou's childhood, some of Anne's tribulations feel almost asinine by comparison. Still, it is not fair to compare books when they both clearly want to do different things, and Anne being annoying sometimes makes sense because all kids are a little annoying sometimes. Overall I think this book does have more positives than negatives, and I'm sure I would have liked it even more if I read it as a kid.

I really love this book but the end really saddened me. It felt so rush and it felt kind of forced in such a way for things to have a bit more of a tragic end to the story. I loves the adventure prose of the story as well as the such loveable characters. I enjoyed the character development too. The book overall felt so cozy and heartwarming. It was just the end that got to me too much and caused me to bump it down a star.

A classic tale of an orphaned girl who is adopted by a couple of unmarried siblings. Through a mixup, Matthew and Marilla wind up with Anne, a spunky 11 year old girl, and not the capable farm boy they had requested. But Anne's cheerful attitude and bright imagination wins over not only her new family, but the whole community. It's a charming book, but it is dated in its attitudes and does quite a bit of moralizing. But Anne gets into quite a few scrapes that make her feel more realistic than the average 20th century heroine.

L.M. Montgomery's Anne of Green Gables is a highly whimsical, wholesome, and enjoyable read. The story is set in the idyllic and salubrious setting of Prince Edward Island, Canada, which perfectly complements the spirited nature of its eponymous protagonist.
Anne Shirley is an exceptionally compelling character. Her vivacity, vim, and ceaseless prolixity make her an endlessly charming protagonist, and indeed, are no doubt the reason she is such a beloved literary character. From her very first introduction, Anne's boundless imagination and spirited personality captured my heart.
A highlight of my read of the book was witnessing Anne's growth and maturation into a (slightly) more well-rounded individual. Throughout the novel, we see Anne navigate various trials and tribulations, gradually learning to temper her impulsive nature with a deeper sense of empathy.
Equally enchanting is the development of Anne's relationships with her adoptive parents, Matthew and Marilla Cuthbert. Matthew's quiet, unconditional support and Marilla's initially stern but ultimately loving guidance provide a heartwarming backdrop to Anne's journey. Their evolving dynamics speak to the power of love and family (biological or adoptive).
Slightly hampered by some excessive melodrama, and unrealistic in its quixotism, the novel’s overall charm nonetheless earns it a solid 4 out of 5 stars.
