Didn't hit quite as hard as The Wicker King did for me (for obvious reasons) but I still found this really lovely.

Also, god DAMN the author notes in these books are next level, phew.

I loved Ancrum's first book The Wicker King, a m/m contemporary about a toxic codependent friendship turned something more. She did an excellent job portraying an unhealthy relationship and the ways it needed to change for them to have a healthy relationship. I really loved The Weight of Our Stars (with a f/f romance this time) too! I enjoyed the hate-to-love, slow burn relationship between Ryann (a girl) and Alexandria. I loved all the unlikely friendships in Ryann's strange little group of friends. I loved how supportive they all were of each other and I loved how determined Ryann was to help Alexandria listen to the messages her mom was sending her from space. I loved that there were so many diverse characters and that there was an actual character with 3 parents in m/m/f polyamorous relationship. I loved Ryann's relationship with her brother and the way they looked out for each other and weren't afraid to show affection. All of that was amazing. The ending made me cry, in a good way. My only issue is that it could be a little slow at times and I needed a little more excitement, and I also expected it to have way more scifi elements. It’s more a story about relationships than a story about space. But I still enjoyed it and the wonderful ending mostly made up for that! Overall I’d definitely recommend this book.

Diveristy: bisexual butch female main character, biracial(?) queer female love interest. Also queer and poc side characters, and one of the mc's (main characters) best friends has 2 dads and a mom. Like, 3 parents in an actual polyamorous relationship!! The mc's brother is mute and doesn't talk, due to trauma.

‪ALSO: I JUST REALIZED THAT THE MAIN CHARACTERS FROM THE AUTHORS FIRST BOOK ‘THE WICKER KING’ ARE THE POLYAM TRIO PARENTS OF THE MC’S BEST FRIEND IN ‘THE WEIGHT OF THE STARS’!!!?HOW DID I MISS THIS. LITERALLY JACK/AUGUST/RINA FROM THE WICKER KING ARE AHMED’S PARENTS HOLY SHIT‬ I AM ACTUALLY CRYING

I'm not going to rate this book as I only got a few pages in before I decided to give up and I don't think it would be fair.

However, this is the second book I've tried to read by this author (the first was The Wicker King and I persevered through that despite it feeling like wading through treacle) and I just can't get along with their writing style! I tried again because I wondered whether maybe the style was pertinent to the story and this book would be different but alas, no.

Sorry K. Ancrum, I'm sure you have an audience that loves the one page chapters and "poetic" writing style, but I'm not one of them.

It was just so beautiful. The people that find each other and love, thrive, bloom despite so many others assuming they won't or can't because of past hardships or trauma. The intimate moments between a trusting teacher and her student, siblings who respect one another's secrets, adults who see the kid their kid needs in their life, so many wonderful, lovely moments we don't get enough of.
Oh, how I hugged this book with my brain.
