Brilliant! Everyone I’ve heard say that this trilogy is the worst of the Elderling group is wrong! 😅

The character work is amazing- you hate every character at one point or another but you know why they are the way they are.

The way Hobb takes on slavery, greed, coming of age, passion, religion, and probably other themes I’m not remembering, is expertly crafted.

When I first started I thought “why is she writing about men again?!” But she isn’t 😀

The ending was wrapped up so smoothly with a lot left to ponder on for the next book.

okay the age gap relationships are starting to get weird. Robin, what’s going on there?? I feel like this book is just an exercise in “hindsight is 20/20.” You can see the characters making the wrong decisions and you just want to stop them. And let me tell you, boy do these characters make the wrong decisions. Choice after choice after choice. The characters are realistic, but at what cost?? This book was at times very hard to read because it was just so bleak. I’m interested to see where it goes, but also scared.

What with the web of names, places and plotlines to keep up with - not to mention the glacial pace - it took me a while to get into this. But I was rewarded with some of the best character work I've ever read! The "villains" are all really fun to hate, the underdogs (Especially Wintrow and Althea) are absolutely put upon, and even characters I found annoying (I'm looking at you Malta) got more interesting towards the end.

I'm really looking forward to picking up the next in the trilogy now, even though this one took me nearly a month to get through.
