I initially rated it 4/5 because I thought the beginning was pretty slow and hard to get through, but honestly with how much this book occupies my thoughts, it doesn't seem fitting to leave it at that. I feel like it hits all my favorite genres with fantasy, romance (one could even say dark romance), and a thriller feel and huge plot twist at the end

I am not a big fan of modern/urban settings with fantasy. This was a mixture of urban and traditional fantasy. I also was not a huge fan of the writing style, but when I read this I did not want to DNF any book so I kept going. It isn't the most captivating thing I've read. It isn't very deep, very surface level, but it's a nice easy read. It's interesting enough that I kept reading into the second book.

I need more Malum Mendax STAT, I'm obsessed. I laughed, I cried, I screamed, and I stared into the abyss for a while. I- I don't even know; this book still has my jaw on the floor - Just read it. The way I believed everything she said only to be stabbed in the back, I am sobbing. The imagery is lovely and right up my alley with mushrooms and luna moth talk. I'm off to find a fairy ring now, byeeee.

Women in STEM: (S)inister (T)reacherous (E)vil (M)Alice
Environmental scientist is rehabilitated to the middle of butt f*ck nowhere and hated for being smart and a woman (shocker). She ends up getting mushroom portaled into the realm of the fae and body slams directly into Tall, Dark, and Murderous. And…. Just go read this damn book y’all. I’m gonna go stare at the ceiling for the next 5-7 business days.

This was really hard to get into, and really only started to get interesting the last quarter of the book.
But the ending left me with just enough curiosity that I’ll probably read the second book, just to see what the heck happens.
It wasn’t a bad book, per se, but Mendax was definitely overwritten to be “evil, hating all humans and completely emotionless prince”. Like how many times does it have to be said that he hates humans and loves killing?

Had an unexpected twist!
The imagery is beautiful and I love the uniqueness of the main character. Has a twist I wasn't expecting! A good , though dark, read.

I love how steminista Callie is. She gives ali hazelwood a run for her moneyy. All the stem protagonists in her books don’t have anything on miss Callie who’s a REAL scientist to the point where she can sniff poisons and use venom as an antidote. Felt a little disjointed between the first part of the book in the human world and the fae world but I did enjoy this book. Interesting lore about Fae and world building. I do wish there was more explanation for things and more world building. Also wish there was less insta-love between Callie and medak but I was intrigued the entire time. I needed to better understand why he was obsessed w her like yeah she’s hot and smell good but WHAT ELSEEE? . And it seemed like she didn’t even like him at times, and was only sexually attracted to him. Def need more relationship buildup but the tension was THERE MAMA. Ya kept me on my TOES and made me burn. So thanks for that :)

I don’t normally read dark fantasy or dark romance, so after accepting that the storyline was going to be fucked up (because that’s just the type of book it is) I enjoyed it a lot more. Also the character development is CRUCIAL to the plot, as the main character irritated me at the beginning.
As for the ending, I didn’t see the whole twist coming. Which is great! I have a habit of guessing and ruining the experience, so I was glad that out of all my theories I was only half right.
The reason I didn’t give 5 stars is because even though I devoured the story, I’m not DYING to read the second book. Will I read it? Absolutely, as soon as it comes out. But do I have an incurable book hangover? Not really.
It was a good, smutty story with entertaining twists and turns. I can see why some people are losing their minds over it though!
