this was fine, but i wouldn’t recommend it as someone’s first or even second experience of dune. of course a graphic novel adaptation is going to be a majorly abridged version of the story, but i really wasn’t a fan of how the dialogue was also simplified. one of my favorite lines from dune:

“my son displays a general garment and you claim it’s cut to your fit? what a fascinating revelation.”

was changed to:

“my son makes a general statement and you think he is talking about you? what a fascinating revelation.”

all which leads me to say i think this is worth reading if you’re already a fan of dune and/or you need a refresher. essentially a visual sparknotes

I’m so glad I picked up this graphic novel version of Dune before attempting to finish the novel again. The artwork added an extra layer of understanding for me when it came to interpreting the text. About halfway through I really found myself interested in the story but it still felt quite stiff which makes sense for a science-fiction novel written in the 60s. I can definitely see why this is the OG sci-fi story.

Now I just have to decide whether to watch the original film or to try reading the novel again.
Read this title with a gallon of water and a pronunciation guide.

Evoluzione lenta, discorsi molto frammentati.

I read this first installment of the Dune Graphic Novel in one afternoon sitting. I'll happily give it 5 stars because I think it is a fantastic artistic representation of the original novel. In my mind, as I read, I compared this graphic novel to watching a movie. A good movie. One that captures the characters and tone of the book. But, like a movie, this graphic novel catches only a fraction of the nuance and world building created in Herbert's original novel. I'll look forward to reading the other two installments - and I'm also grateful that I've already read (listened to the audio-book) to the entire original work.

I was tempted to see what someone makes of this classic. I‘ve read the novel several times, so I did not really spend a lot of time reading the text carefully. I was more interested in the visualization. The artwork is actually pretty nice, but I realized quickly that I do not want to read this now. It‘s me, not the graphic novel.
