honestly loved the book. i dislike that it’s written by a male author but i think it sheds so much light onto how men perceive women, whether by intent or not. the third person narrative (from a boy/man) also further highlights this.

i think you need to have a certain level of empathy to really understand the book. a lot of really complex topics are narrated in detail and makes you think and reflect deeply. it is slow/medium pace so the build up to these (potentially triggering) descriptions is more digestible.

necessary read for anyone looking to further understand post modern feminism

i had high expectations going in. while i get that the book is supposed to show how the boys romanticized the sisters even after their deaths, it really annoyed me! i would've preferred to read about this story through the sisters' perspective. men... blablabla...

The five Lisbon girls are the treasures of their town. They fascinate young boys and their tale survives even after they killed themselves. I have no idea what I just read or what the conclusion of the book is. It is a strange and mysterious story filled with trauma.

Really slow with unnecessary racism and ableism. Monotonous details from the brains of boys that I wasn’t really interested in. However, I enjoyed the mystery surrounding the Lisbon girls, but I would’ve enjoyed it more from someone else’s point of view. The movie is fairly true to the book, but I think it’s all a little too slow for me.

Very interesting and sad. Seems like a very socially critical and male heavy view on young women and girls and theirs struggles. Don’t know if this was intentional or not, but is sadly a accurate description of the real world.
