What constitutes defective? Is it how you see yourself or how others see you? I really enjoyed this short story and was hooked from the start. It portrays a companions fight with itself and the emotions that are wired into her. Definatly a fun read and a good lead into the other books in the series.

A quick, fun read set in the world of the author's Ionia Chronicles, the short story "Defective" follows Zee, a character introduced in the forthcoming Vagabond Souls and follows her on her first mission as a sentient robot apart from her creator. We get Zee's perspective on trying to pass as human and the cost of her failure to both her and the woman who created and programed her. I enjoyed getting Zee's thoughts and seeing how differently she saw the world because of her robot brain, but also how she didn't want to be apart from it and very much cared about humans. This story hit a lot in its short length: near-future androids, technology, and a hint at politics, but also had fun action and human-robot relationships.
