The Brilliant Death by Amy Rose Capetta is a great young adult fantasy novel with a unique storyline. The designs inside the book and the cover art are absolutely gorgeous and I can't wait to see what the final version of this book will look like. I really enjoyed the characters and how they develop as the story goes on, and the rich setting of this world. I really enjoyed learning about the strega and their history alongside Teodora as she learns about her self and how she came to have her unique magic. I loved how Teo and Cielo's love develops and unfolds through the story and I can't wait to see what is next for them. The story had an amazing ending that already has me anticipating book two in this epic new fantasy series.

I REALLY enjoyed this. It was excellent and totally well done. The writing style was great and the magic system is so captivating. I’m definitely curious about what else this author writes.

Gorgeous, fascinating. I kept wanting to underline things (but this copy was from the library - waiting for the pb release). I was wondering why the negative comments I saw re. plot and world-building (mostly I appreciated that it wasn't super heavy on either), and it seemed that the reviewer didn't connect with it from the start (also some people, unlike me, just like heavy plot and world-building). But I loved this, was drawn into it before we even got to all the gender stuff, and then it just made my heart so happy. I hadn't known I needed this book but I clearly did.

I liked some parts, some parts were very slow, and some parts were too dramatic for me. By the end all I could think was “we get it, you’re a di Sangro.” But the genderbend-y queer bits were really well done, as were the bits on gender roles, and overall it was a decent book

Interesting

So I think this is a pretty good book for preteens. It covers the whole gamut of feelings preteens go through, but in a fantastical package that doesn’t feel patronizing at all. It explores feelings of inadequacy, being uncomfortable in one’s own skin, self-exploration, and gender fluidity. Maybe the gender fluidity was a bit heavy handed, but again- spot on for preteens who aren’t sure of themselves, their sexuality, and their sense of self. Lovely
