I admit to have watching the movie before reading the book it was a challenge trying to not compare what I've seen to what I'm reading. This book was very emotional and most likely not, but maybe exactly what I needed to read. Finch's experience with "sleep and awake" were beautifully described and depicted throughout the entire thing it made so much sense, I related heavily. The author was able to describe what my whole teen life has felt like in plain worded terms.

One of my absolute favourite books, will never tire of it nor will I ever stop crying towards the end. Jennifer Niven creates an absolutely beautiful story filled with symbolism and two of my most favourite literary characters. You can’t help but love Finch and you can’t help but want to help Violet. The colour symbolism of the book sticks out the most to me, the colour blue especially but disappearing and turning white/black and Finch’s dead body being described as blue when he’s found (😭). The themes of water, appearance vs reality, Niven really creates a profound world disguised as a regular YA love story.

The author’s note at the end is the best thing about this book. I think she did a pretty good job of writing bipolar disorder but something about the end of the book just doesn't sit well with me. I liked the dual perspectives and the way the chapters were short. The way the characters kept track of time changed was a cute detail. Overall, I didn't really like it much and I can't quite put my finger on why. I think 16 year old me would have liked it a lot better than I do at 24.

As someone who loves "Looking For Alaska", it felt like the cheap knockoff version. Started slow but did have a good end.
