Upon second reading, the book was good, and Sir Arthur was a bloody racist. I didn't realize that Wiggins and his friends were Arabs and not any Arabs but according to Dr Watson: " there rushed into the room half a dozen of the dirtiest and most ragged street Arabs that ever I clapped eyes on."
I didn't know anything about Mormons before reading this book, but Sir Arthur managed to be racist to them, too.
Even though these stories reek with racism, to me Sherlock Holmes will always be my favorite character.

I’ve been meaning to read this since I was little and I’m glad I finally got to it. People say that the second part of the book is jarring but since I knew it was coming I wasn’t phased and thought it was very engaging.

To go from A Study in Scarlet -- where Holmes and Watson have only just met, regard each other with suspicion, and are utterly unknown to the world -- right into The Hound of the Baskervilles -- where Holmes and Watson trust each other implictly, desperately seek each other's praise and approval, and have become so famous that people associate one with the other by name alone -- makes no sense. Still, these are both deeply satisfying rereads, and I am delighted to have done so.
