Most of my problems with this one are self-creates: I didn’t pay attention to the fact that this is book #2. While you can figure out what’s happening on this adventure, there is a lot of emphasis placed on their backstory and events that transpired in the first book. Otherwise, it’s a solid intermediate chapter book: standalone mystery within a series with a few longer reaching threads linking the books, plenty of illustrations, mostly appropriate vocabulary, and enough danger to keep you guessing.
