This wasn't so bad for the most part. The mild racism towards Lin Chung by several of the other guests was a bit uncomfortable, but pointedly mentioned as being wrong. But then at the end the book just takes a turn and there's some major grossness complete with numerous rape mentions and a really really gross abusive sexist character and I just was totally turned off the whole book by it, tbh. I mean I know he was the villain, but still.
(Also this author REALLY has a thing for sexual violence towards younger girls and it's seriously uncomfortable after awhile.)

More about Miss Fisher's relationship with Lin Chung, and a delightful minor character whose name is Miss Mary Mead and there's a minor clue about her character in the name, and when the truth came out about her I had to smile at the aptness of it all.
Murder of a maid and threatening letters and lots of red herrings in a house party that also has a lot of characters who are not what they seem.

This one had a really strong first 75%, I was really enjoying the golden age of detective stories vibe of the country house murder mystery, it goes a little wild towards the end but I did still like it. Lin Chung is fine, that boat house scene was very spicy! No Det. Insp. Robinson though, unfortunately.

In general I quite liked this. There is a fine line to walk portaying generally sympathetic characters with period-common prejudices while ensuring that the narrative itself does not condone these prejudices, and I think in general the series is successful at that. I feel like it has begun to rely too much on unhinged characters as its antagonists, though, and part of the joy of reading mysteries is that the clues be there to solve and there are times when this series definitely privileges style and Phryne's own cleverness over laying those clues out for the reader.
