Probably closer to 3.5 stars.
I'm not in recovery (I have a hyper interest in alcohol addiction memoirs) so it would be interesting to hear from those that are in recovery and used this book to further that process.

My big takeaways:
1) If you can't enjoy life or an event sober, you need to reevaluate your life.
2) If you are stuck in life, try volunteering or joining a group.
3) Whitaker, while focused on her alcoholism for the book, had a host of other issues. I doubt any addiction is created in a vacuum so take the time to figure out the why of your problem.

Of course, I'm speaking from a place of great privilege and this does not work for everyone. Whitaker got a little....not preachy but just listing all the things that worked for her (while acknowledging that they don't work for everyone) and that was a little monotonous. I could have done without the sexual stuff but it wasn't a book killer.
If you need some reminders of getting out of your life rut, or you have a penchant for alcohol memoirs, I recommend this book. I can't speak to how it helps/does not help one in recovery.

Insightful and empowering especially for those who feel like the “traditional route” doesn’t work for them.

I think this is a good book to pick up and slowly read, trying to read it all at once felt repetitive and difficult. I thought the book could have benefited from some serious paring down.
