I absolutely love this. I started listening the weekend I turned 21 and its exactly what I hoped. Its so detailed in discussions about systemic oppressions and how the alcohol industry targets oppressed groups, how alcohol exploits women particularly, and how recovery isn't just not using the substance, its about being actually comfortable with yourself. The first 6 chapters were phenomenally eye opening and the last 2 were so well rounded but what keeps me from giving it 5 stars is some of the ways she describes/explains things - like at one point she describes trauma as "stuck energy" so that certain therapies she believes in are not "unlike unkinking a garden hose to let water through". This feels like new age mumbo jumbo to me as do the talks of chakras, etc so i just can't give it full marks.

You absolutely do not need to be in recovery to read this and find it useful. The first 6 chapters are dissecting the alcohol industry and AA and those alone are fascinating topics. Theres chapters on how to have fun without alcohol which everyone can use and its just a really great place to learn about the widespread issues that plague people where alcohol is concerned.

I recommend the audiobook bc the author is the best possible narrator for it. I also recommend listening to/reading Gender Outlaw by Kate Bornstein at the same time- they play off each other so well.
