Wow! I can see why this author is so popular. This book exceeded my expectations. I loved the story and the crazy characters. This is likely going to be one of my all-time favorite series.

While this book was well-conceived and well-written, I didn't enjoy it. The characters didn't evoke strong feelings in me, so it was difficult to care about the story. All I felt for the characters was mild: mild irritation, mild contempt, mild amusement, and every once in a long while, mild empathy. I also found it incredibly annoying (books split up into trilogies or series that don't have their own story arc bug me) that for a book >500 pages, it felt like it was only a third of a book with everything merely being setup. I hope that Abercrombie lives up to the foundation that he built in the remaining two books of the trilogy, but I'm not jumping to read them. I may get around to it, eventually.
If I were to rate this book solely on my enjoyment, it would've been two stars, but I bumped it up for its writing and and world-building. Abercrombie has a fine command of the English language, and I liked the way in which he uses seemingly mundane vignettes and snarky internal dialog to paint a vivid picture of his characters and world.
There were probably many contributing factors to why I didn't enjoy this book as much as anticipated, including high expectations (rave reviews by many others), the short attention span of this day and age (I've been reading fast-paced fat fantasy action books lately), and listening to this as an audiobook (though the narration was superb, I may have been less bored/more interested if I had been reading th text since I would've finished faster; also, even a superb narration pales in excitement to a Graphic Audio production, and I had listened to three of those previous to this one).
