Recommended to me by my Dad. A lovely classic and I'm so glad I read it!
We follow a young 14-year-old boy, Travis, dealing with the family farm in 1860 whilst his father is away for a few months. A stray dog appears one day and although Travis dislikes him the dog soon proves his worth.
I'm glad you are told the ending at the beginning, I think you could probably guess it anyway. I thought I'd cry and be heartbroken but I wasn't, Gipson handles it really well, especially in the talk Travis has with his father. A really great coming-of-age story, with a fair bit of action in such a short book. Really recommend!
