I forgot how much I love these books! There's some pretty lame high-school style drama, but for the most part they're really addictive. And of course they make me incredibly motivated when it comes to studying Wicca (lots of Hollywood-style magick, but inspiring nonetheless)!

Sweep Volume 2 by Cate Tiernan

What I Didn’t Like:
-Definitely full of the “haven’t we heard this story before” vibes, probably because I read this genre so much. For better or worse I felt shades of the House of Night series, my beloved Zoe Daniels series, and any other series where someone realizes they’re some supernatural/paranormal entity. You know what I mean, you’ve read them.
-Jesus/God or Goddess, pick one. I get that Morgan is raised Catholic and is learning to embrace her Wiccan roots, but it’s weird that most of the series she specifically thinks in terms of Goddess and defaults to Jesus/God when she’s in crisis.
-Cliffhangers. Get the series in this trilogy chonks, friends, because you’ll want it. Each of these stories ends with a cliffhanger, but it hurts less if you have three books to wade through because you can just keep going. Didn’t help the end of this one though … that hangs.

What I Did Like:
-Grammatically correct. That seems like a silly thing to mention, but it really is. There aren't any errors in this one even though we’re talking about almost 600 pages. It just reads easy and flows because it’s well written and error free.
-Wraps you up in the drama. One of the things that YA does so well is completely throw you into the drama of the life of the main character. This is no different. She has everyday problems (relationship drama, issues connecting with her sister, religious struggles) and then she compounds those with her wiccan drama. It’s fascinating and it sucks you in.
-Cliffhangers. Yup, I just mentioned those. But I’ll mention them again because not every author can leave you with a cliffhanger that makes you pick up the next one. Sometimes it’s not enough. Sometimes the book doesn’t stand up to that ending and you realize you don’t mind if you never find out how it ends. This one doesn’t do that. When this ends with you hanging on that cliff, you have to know what happens next. I just added another almost 600 pages trilogy volume to my TBR because I have to know. That’s the mark of a good cliffhanger.

The Verdict: This is a tough one. If you like the drama of a YA book infused with a story about wicca, if you like reluctant hero tropes combined with learning-my-powers stories, if you like love triangles … this is your book. Maybe it’s not that difficult, that’s pretty niche. 3 stars … but if that happens to be YOUR niche this will be your new favorite series.

**SERIES REVIEW - Reviews don't differ between each book**

The Sweep series follows the story of Morgan Rowlands, a teenage girl who discovers her witch heritage and learns how to use her powers while navigating the challenges of love, friendship, and family. The series I have read is the omnibus style, with three of the original 15 book "Wicca" series books that have been made into 5 longer books.

The series begins with "Book of Shadows," where we are introduced to Morgan, a high school student who leads a fairly ordinary life until she meets Cal Blaire, a handsome and mysterious new student who awakens her magical abilities. As Morgan delves deeper into the world of witchcraft, she becomes entangled in a dangerous love triangle between Cal and Hunter Niall, an International Council of Witches Seeker sent to investigate Cal and his mother for misuse of magic. It follows all the way through two years of Morgan's life and her discovery of heritage and friendship, ending the series with a happily ever after. An added bonus to the series is the "standalone" Wicca Book - Night's Child, which is centered around Morgan's daughter decades later.

Throughout the series, Tiernan masterfully weaves together themes of love, betrayal, loyalty, and self-discovery. Morgan's journey is compelling and at times, relatable, as she struggles to balance her responsibilities as a witch with her desire for a normal life. The supporting characters, including Morgan's best friend Bree, her coven, and her love interests Cal and Hunter, are fully fleshed out and add depth to the story.

Tiernan's writing style is engaging and immersive, with vivid descriptions of magic and the natural world. The pacing of the series is well-balanced, with moments of intense action and suspense alternating with quieter moments of introspection and character development.

Overall, Sweep is a captivating series that will appeal to fans of young adult fantasy and romance. Tiernan's skillful storytelling, richly-drawn characters, and evocative setting will keep readers engaged from start to finish. Perfect for teen readers, as younger readers may not understand the heavier life challenges facing Morgan. This series has always been one of my comfort reads, having read all of them since their release in 2001 when I was a sweet little teenager - I used to lock myself away and read them one after another over the course of a few days, having them permanently borrowed by borrowing and returning then borrowing again from my local library. Eventually, as an adult I was able to purchase the 5 book copies and still read them now in my 30's.
