Not much to say here as everything I've written about L.J. Smith applies to this one as well. Okay, I do like the character Nick a bit. I'll give her credit in her descriptions of New England. They are very vivid and full of life. Smith does do a good job when it comes to describing the natural world, she's just muddled down with standard cliches when it comes to people.

Once I started listening to the audiobooks of this series I could not stop and I raced through several of the books in just a few days. In terms of Cassie's character development, this is my favourite book in the first trilogy. She is under immense pressure to conform to the circle, which is a group of people who've known each other and their abilities since birth, while Cassie is new to it all. Cassie is clearly trying to obtain a sense of control over her life and her abilities, but every person she comes into contact with seems to have an opinion. As with the first book, I wish that Cassie's grandmother played a larger role in the narrative. It sort of seems like Cassie is just an oasis on Crowhaven Road because the circle just expects her to fall in line and her family expects that she will innately know how to be a witch. Yet, despite all of that Cassie manages to forge a path for herself.

Unless your 14, stay away from this series. It should be classified as Young Young Adult.
