The main plot of the novel is shockingly simple and largely uneventful compared to my usual reads. That being said, this book was extremely captivating and moving for me, reigniting my love for reading and creating meaningful connections through its prolific and deeply impactful wisdom. The story is both comforting and familiar, and I’m thrilled to recommend this to others in the future. I’m already looking forward to the re-read!

Days at the Morisaki Bookshop is a relaxing, introspective piece for book lovers. It also depicts Japanese culture and literature and is quite short, fittingly so, otherwise it would have edged into boring territory.

As I read the book I was able to relax and reflect on my adoration for books and literature, deepen my interest in Japanese literature and yearn for a street full of second hand bookshops.

And I got the impression that that’s the author’s intention. I doubt this was meant to be a great literary statement for me at least Days at the Morisaki Bookshop is a love letter to books and their impact on their readers. The emotions, images and humanity they can inspire.

Long story short: I enjoyed reading the book and would recommend it for a slow, relaxing and comfortable reading experience wherever and whenever.

This book feels like a warm hug after a long day at work. I was hoping to finish this book in a day but instead took my time with it. At first, I scolded myself for taking so long with such a short book, but as is with the creative process to write this book, everything takes time. And to savor it slowly and take note of every little detail which the author has tirelessly put out for the masterpiece, I think this is how I want to appreciate the book. A simple, lighthearted read perfect for those feeling burned out.

brief review: ★★☆☆☆

after reading Welcome to the Hyunam-dong Bookstore, I needed more of... whatever that was. grew up in Tokyo, so this felt like I might find home in it. had me at 'bookshop', but deceivingly, this is not just days spent at a bookshop.

I feel I need to warn people on the fence: the entire second half of this book has very little to do with the bookshop.
the main protagonist is no longer an employee at the bookshop, nor even a frequent customer. the focus of the second half of the book is instead why her aunt had left her uncle many years before.
I don't imagine most viewers would be able to see this coming, hence why I am writing this brief review. if this at all will turn you away, take note.

the sad thing is this didn't have to be a bad thing.
I don't like being yanked away from a bookstore, but it's made much worse by the fact that the whole plotline feels shallow. it may take up most of the second half of the book, but despite the pages dedicated to it, there was not much substance to it.

the second half does have some small deviations from this subplot.
you spend some time with two characters enjoying coffee, you also go on a wilderness trek with the aunt.
I enjoyed both of these as a reader with bias. the two characters
sharing their love for coffee and books - as well as their heartbreak -
really reminded me of a relationship I have in real life. a real highlight of this book for me was thinking "I should call him again," and reaching out to a friend I've had for a decade. I think that is special.
the hike with the aunt warmed my very soul, as a woman who was originally born in Colorado, and has spent a lot of free time roaming the rocky mountains, as well as the forests surrounding Fuji-san.
it is not fair to point out the flaws of this book, without signaling the parts that made me feel warm, and safe.

it's a shame. perhaps I will change this to a 2.5 someday. I can imagine a future where that happens, but per my review scale, 2 stars is essentially 'an attempt'. I feel that sums it up.

"Somehow the whole story is suffused with this quiet tenderness. Little by little I felt something wash over me: a feeling of peace that words can't express. If I had to explain it I'd say it could only have come from the writer's fervent love for life." - Chapter 4, 1:12:14

"After all I was crying because I wanted to cry, and these were the happiest tears I'd ever known." - Chapter 8, 2:23:38

It has many situations in which what the character is feeling is really relatable that I was almost nodding yes that is what happened to me too. The atmosphere it creates for the book lovers is so warm, it soothed my heart and made it lighter. The most explored thing in this was how we affect other people's lives and make impressions on them without ever realising it.
