It's been awhile since I read one of these and I think I forgot just how dark and desolate the series is. You never have any idea who you can trust in this series. Who's the villain? Who's the hero? Who even knows. Still, it drew me in and I was once again following Forever's story and hoping for a good outcome. It was brutal and violent and kept me turning the pages throughout.

This was better than volume 4 and the story is moving along nicely. I did think the art fell down in a few places, mostly facial details, but still though this was a good book.

Rucka has yet to explain why all of the families only have one Lazarus. Carlyle has one and a spare in training, plus one mostly co-opted from a down on their luck ally. Is there a reason why the families don't produce more? Clearly they can. If it was some sort of treaty they would all be breaking it.

Also, what is the rationale for conquest? It seems like the families fight just because that's what they do. I could buy a 'earth is dying so everyone needs more resources,' plot. That seems like it might be the case but is never explicitly stated. Population figures show up all the time to beat in the idea that the earth is significantly depopulated and ruled by a handful of families and a tiny minority of retainers (serfs).

Oh man, I don't know what I'm going to do while I wait for the next volume (and there has to be, right? They can't leave a cliffhanger like that and expect me to stay sane!). This has to be my favourite volume so far, full of secrets and trust and gut-wrenching betrayal. Forever continues to be an amazing and powerful hero, and it was great to see more of Sonja and Joacquim. All of this led to one of the most awesome and shocking final battles I've read in a long time, and if there isn't another book coming this year, I'm going to go insane!

Forever is now suspected of foul play by her family. Although she is aware of of her origins this knowledge cannot prepare he for what she will find out later. But as it is always the case with Lazarii and their respective clans/families somebody (and quite unexpected person mind you) will lend her a hand on her path to better understand her and world around her.

In the meantime in order for her to prove her loyalty Forever is sent onto battlefields but these battles seem more concentrated on destroying the Lazarus troops of the families than on achieving the major war goals. What might be in the background of this?

Action, adventure, conspiracies and terrible facts popping up - what else is there to wish for :) I especially liked the Matrix-like history-repeats-itself twist. Cannot wait on more details regarding this.

Recommended to all fans of SF and action/adventure.

I just want to put this here because it needs to be somewhere in case I don't get around to it:

I really want to make one of those Live, Laugh, Love things, but instead it's the line from Conan:

Picture a scripty font, and the first words are large, the phrases much smaller

CRUSH
your enemies
SEE
them driven before you
HEAR
the lamentations of their women

That's be a very cool home decoration that's super sweet.

This is relevant to the book I'm "reviewing" by the way. But it's fuckin' volume 5. Don't start at volume 5, and if you finished 4 and aren't sure about 5, it's more of the same.

I want more story. I want more words. This book is almost sparse. And yet it still comes through. Layers and layers. And even though there are definitely bad people and worse people, maybe somewhere in this there are good people as well. Fast paced, good enough art. Interesting ideas.
