It is hard not to compare this to the giant, looming presence of Tony Hillerman, but Coel's book holds her own. The fallible, yet likable, Father John balances the demands of the church with his desire to learn more about the Arapaho culture and solve the murder of his friend. The interplay of political aspirations, business dealings, the church, and Arapaho culture mixed with murder are a potent and interesting combination.

I picked this up for a trip in the Wind Rivers, and I enjoyed it quite a bit. It was interesting, had enough real world stuff in it to make me feel invested in it, and it was just a lot better than I had anticipated.

This book was a very pleasant surprise. I liked the characters, the setting and the mystery. I hope to get a chance to read another book in the series.

I tried this one on audio, but it was not working for me. The narrator had a very odd accent that didn't sound authentic at all to me and the story literally put me to sleep. Maybe I will try it again later.

I hope they got a lot of money from Coke, for all the plugs they put in. The only problem with the plot is that Ned stole the murder weapon a month before the victim discovered proof that Ned had stolen the land. Descriptions were unimaginative: gray, blue etc. Fr. John's alcoholism was boring.

Set on the Wind River Indian Reservation in Wyoming, "starring" a Jesuit priest banished to the boonies after he bottoms out in his alcoholism. It begins with the murder of the head tribal councilman. It turns out to have to do with the collision of history with current politics and hubris. Pretty good--I liked the characters, although the writing was a little clunky.
