I'd advise readers to remember that Rebecca is a capital-R Romantic book. It's also gothic, and I think people overlook that. I don't think it's a book most people like the first time around, but that's the way of gothic literature. It requires a second read to fully understand what the book is about. In Rebecca, it's the characters and how you're supposed to feel about them that makes you need to re-read the book.

It was such a thrilling story. I went into this thinking that it was going to be like a ghost story mixed with a sad romance. I was right on the sad romance part but really missed the point in the ghost part. It was psychological thriller and there were many unexpected things happening .
When Maxim said "the look on her face while she was dying" I was like "How did you see that dude she died alone at sea. Then the twist, the twist hit so hard, it was better than many murder mystery novels. I'm still shook that Maxim actually killed Rebecca. Also I kept thinking that Rebecca was pregnant so the last twist was also unexpected to me.
It was a very complex story and after the first ten pages I was hooked. I might read this again in the future since it was that good.

Wowie zowie. What a treat! The atmosphere is unreal, suspense kills you by the point you reach the halfway mark. And then, it keeps you on your toes some more. In awe of such mysterious and atmospherical writing. You also get character study on the main character (who bears no first name by the way, only Rebecca can have one). She evolves throughout the story, rising to the occasion though she is set up as young and useless for a big chunk of the novel. With first person narration you get a thorough glimpse of her psyche. Her anxiety (especially social anxiety) felt relatable and well described, I thought the way one sees oneself (negatively) and exagerates their defaults was spot on. The discussion of class was also welcome.
Great twists and when you think it’s over it’s not, all the way to the end. Really, hat’s off to Daphné du Maurier. Excited to watch the adaptation by Hitchcock (1940) and the most recent one produced by Netflix (out of curiosity though I expect it won’t be nearly as good as Hitchcock’s). Unequivocally 5/5 read.

Almost every problem the narrator went through could have been easily solved if she had never agreed to what I truly believe is the worst marriage proposal in fiction I've ever seen.
