One of the things that get me really invested in the book is the world building. This book does a great job of introducing the world Gat Burroughs inhabits, and it is as simultaneously foreign and familiar to him as it is to us. I especially enjoyed the descriptions of the area Gat's house is in and his reasons for selecting it.

The characters in this book are all distinctive but relatable, which is also excellent. All too often you see characters that are pretty much the same as another, but with some ostentatious difference from another character to set them apart. In this book, you will find a lot of decently rounded characters, which is always a treat for someone new to a universe.

The plot is interesting and the story flows along at a brisk pace. My only problem with the protagonist was that he did not appear to do any detective like deductions or think much about the mystery himself. At one point, he is handed an series of answers by another character and he accepts them due to the logic inherent in these answers. It makes the final revelation (predictably it all clicks in his head at the crucial moment) a bit hard to swallow.

To sum up this review: would I buy the next book in the series? Definitely. Would I recommend this book to others? Yes, I would recommend it to anyone interested in science fiction and/or detective stories.
