I remember reading this once or twice as a teenager, and after reading Beauty recently I felt the need to reread more from the author, who was my favourite when I was younger. I have strong memories of parts of this book (I was probably too young back then to understand the events that serve as a catalyst for the heroines journey), and rereading it as an adult still provided the same intense experience. Highly recommended for those who like fairy tale retellings.

Incredibly heavy. Didn't realize what I was getting into when I got to reading it (although I'm sure the summary had hinted to it enough).

My only issue here is the usual issue I have w/ Robin McKinley, which is the long, drawn-out and sometimes winding prose. For some stories, it works really, really well. For Deerskin, while mostly understandable--especially with regard to our heroin's emotional and psychological recovery--it was just too much. I was at the end of my patience.

All in all, true to McKinley's style, although I am not too inclined to go for a second reading.

IDK how I feel about this one. I liked it a lot (it's Robin McKinley, how could I not), but I have other feelings about it too that are more complicated. I think that's probably a pretty common experience with this book.

It took me awhile to get into this book. I would pick it up and read it bits and pieces at a time. But finally I did get into it, and then it was hard to put it down. One of the reviews on the back cover described the story as dreamlike and I feel that describes it well. This story deals with some hard issues, and shows how Lissar deals with the challenges she faces. I liked the magic in this story. At first it seemed like it was hardly there, just in the background. Overall, I really enjoyed this book.

A brutal yet sensitively handled fairy tale retelling. Slow at times but worth it! Also, Xe Sands is the best audiobook narrator
