It is such a delight to read a book with a complex character - not entirely likable, not entirely revealed to the reader, lots of history and connections. And then to find out that there are TWO MORE books that describe the same story (with, presumably, more detail and back story and details and ?) from the viewpoint of two of the other main characters? What a treat.

What a great read. Old Filth (standing for Failed in London, Try Hong Kong) is the nickname of respected lawyer and judge, Sir Edward Feathers. As the novel progresses layers of his personality are revealed as we also travel through his life story. We jump from childhood to the present and all points in between but the author handles the shifts in time so well that I never felt lost. There are touches of humour, for Filth is certainly an interesting character, but also great pathos as the life experiences our hero has gone through have clearly had a huge impact on his personality. He is the embodiment of the ‘stiff upper lip’. Looking forward to reading the other two books in the series.

Meh. I was ok. The time jumps were hard to follow and I never really connected to the story or characters.

I struggle to connect with these types of character despite them being drawn very well. Reminded me of Boyd’s Any Human Heart.

I found this book to be fairly confusing, until the end when most of it came together. An interesting step outside my typical reading material
