A great overview of around 100 years of German history. It doesn't get into depths of many topics but acts as a great starting point.
Hoyer also weaves a major theme into her narrative about the empire and as a German I can still see many of these things in Germans and Germany today.

Does a great job summarizing the time period in question, but to achieve its condensed pace it assumes the reader has broad familiarity with the course of 19th-20th century European political history. This really is a narrow history of Germany, vs. using Germany to tell a broader European story.

Well presented history. Easy to follow for someone who didn't really know much about the founding of the German Empire. Hoyer clarifies the role of the Kaisers and Bismarck. Tragic when you see the many events and errors of the 1900 decade as a lead-up to WWI.
