Tracy Clark-Flory, get out of my head! This book is everything I needed. From the “there are so many ways to hurt, but I chose sex. I chose men.” To the “I was a girl living in a world where women’s desire is narrowed to being desired, and where physical and reputational danger lurk behind every sexual encounter.” Disgustingly honest and imperiously beautiful. A must read.

Was listening on audio & I appreciated her take & the memoir aspect, but after the book returned for the library, I don’t feel compelled to seek it out to finish it

hm i was disappointed by this, maybe because of my own expectations. for a journalist who spent years exploring the nuances of sexuality and the porn industry in america, this felt pretty surface-level. even her personal anecdotes felt like she was keeping the reader at an arm's distance — like a good journalist would, i suppose. also maybe because i've been reading some really mind-bending stuff from chris kraus and sheila heti, and this just felt so... level 1 feminist.

I picked this book up from a TikTok that declared it a must read for women and I am glad I did. Tracy brings honest and vulnerable parts of her life and examines them through the lenses of sometimes contradictory feminists critique. Beyond the great story telling of her evolution as a woman, this book reinforced that sexual revolution, like any revolution, needs to be confronted as a collective versus individually. Ultimately desires can come from a variety of experiences and materialize in many different ways, but it flourished with security, acceptance, and intimacy.
