Cuando era muy pequeña, creo que con cinco años, me pusieron una versión en vídeo de este cuento en clase y me dejó totalmente aterrorizada, aunque la mayoría de mis compañeros de clase se rieron con él.

Al rescatar estos recuerdos, busqué por internet hasta encontrar este libro y lo compré sin pensarlo dos veces. Es un libro precioso, maravillosamente ilustrado que creo debe tenerse en cuenta a la hora de narrar a un niño, pero, a ser posible, sin buscar que el niño pegue un salto al final del cuento, como me pasó a mí XD.

I loved this book as a child. I especially liked looking for the black cat in each illustration. I used to get it from the library so often that eventually Dad bought our own copy. We start the story on "a dark, dark moor" and travel towards "a dark, dark house", which is then explored. The surprise at the end is very sweet.

The illustrations in this book are the epitome of gothic. There is such a Halloween-y vibe in this simple little book. The surprise ending is pretty cute too, and the suspense building up to it adds to the gloomy tension. 10/10 recommend for any age.

Sean chose A Dark, Dark Tale by Ruth Brown for Harriet when we were at the library. It was first published when my brother was three but I don't remember reading the book back then. It feels like a modern picture book so I have to admit to being surprised at its age.

A Dark, Dark Tale builds on a suspense, starting in the forest and following a black cat as he creeps through the forest and into an apparently abandoned old manor. Somewhere in the heart of this house is a dark, dark secret.

Up until the end, Harriet loved the book. The artwork is gorgeous and it's a good mix of a ghost story and a cat story. The ending though was a let down. After all that suspense there isn't a ghost or a monster or anything remotely scary.

This is a favourite of mine when I was a kid. Fantastic illustrations and an easy to follow, repetitive text.
