I can't believe the person who gave us Charlotte's Web wrote this! It's sexist, they (ok, the swans) give away their children, and being in debt is framed as a grave moral failure.

We read this as a family, and I spent more time explaining these shortcomings to my kids than actually reading.

I did a quick read of this book to help my grandson with a book report. I can’t believe how much I enjoyed it. E.B. White had a way of making animals come to life. I thought it was magical but I can see why it might be a difficult read for a third grader. At the same time, I believe it’s important for children to read classic literature even though the terminology and language has changed a lot since when the book was written. I think it gives them a sense of history.

Once I suspended disbelief it was ok. I guess E.B. White's speciality is talking animals. Now that I've got his number the books are going to be easier to read.

Another favourite of mine! In my opinion E.B White didn't write enough children's lit at all!! I loved every one of his book.

"Like the rest of his family, Louis is a trumpeter swan. But unlike his four brothers and sisters, Louis can't trumpet joyfully. In fact, he can't even make a sound. And since he can't trumpet his love, the beautiful swan Serena pays absolutely no attention to him.

Louis tries everything he can think of to win Serena's affection -- he even goes to school to learn to read and write. But nothing seems to work. Then his father steals him a real brass trumpet. Is a musical instrument the key to winning Louis his love?" (From Amazon)

A great novel for early readers.
