Big Wave

I absolutely loved this book. I think I write that about every book KN writes though. The romance. The suspense. It’s all there and so good.

I liked it…

So, I really liked the story, overall. I wanted to finish and find out what happens in the end. It did drag for me, though. I think there was just too much extraneous detail in some places and even though there was some suspense, it was extra slow (in my opinion). I was easily distracted by other things around me when reading it…

Out of the Blue will definitely be one of my favorite reads of 2021. I'm so glad my friend Kellisa put this book on my radar - and I will be following in her footsteps and reading as much Kathryn Nolan as possible!

A bit about the story...Serena is a professional surfer who has just signed a deal to be the spokesperson for a well-known surf brand, Aerial. She's excited for the opportunity to bring attention to topics that are close to her heart - like gender equality in the sport of surfing. Aerial hires a protective detail for her and it just so happens her bodyguard is Cope - her ex-husband she hasn't seen in 4 years. Cope would be quick to point out he's not actually her ex-husband, no papers were ever filed.

Cope and Serena have made me believe in second chance romances - a trope I usually avoid. There is SO MUCH I loved about this book but I want to let you experience it for yourself. I'll just say if you enjoy banter that will make you smile, romance that will make you swoon and sex scenes that will make you sweat - pick up this book! I couldn't put this down but am sad to be finished - I want to spend more time in the world of this book.

Second chance romances are not in my top list of tropes I enjoy but this author did it well.

I thought the characters gave into their past trauma well, they communicated nicely and I didn't have to worry that it was a miscommunication that was the dramatic down foe them. Although you could say thats why they broke up but the present characters didn't suffer too much from a miscommunication and they actually improve from what you read. (Does that make sense? Probably not.)

Surfing is a unique sport for me to read. I'm a huge fan of swimming but I dislike the sea, quite scared of open water like that. Although I want to love it. The panic I get nope. So I didn't really love the surfing scenes. Not going to knock the author too much. Its literally a book about a female surfer so duh. There will be open water descriptions. Mentioning it for myself if I reread in the future and for anyone else that doesn't enjoy the open water maybe this book isn't for you.

The romance between them was so nice. It is slow burn but its not agonising it came to a head nicely. Wasn't put on too quick or too long. Just right... (ha)

The slight suspense was really nice. I liked that angle a lot. It was fun and made for an interesting read.

surfer x bodyguard and they are ex husband and wife?? hell yes. THIS BOOK WAS EXACTLY WHAT I HOPED IT WOUDL BE.

This book was the perfect second chance romance, I was in the mood for (thank you T for the recommendation <3 ).

Serena and Cope fell madly in love with each other and got married when they were 24.
Now, 4 years later, they haven’t seen or talked to each other in those years. Serena made it to the top and is a pro surfer now. Cope is a hot bodyguard.

And suddenly their paths cross again: Cope is assigned as Serena’s security guard.

Whilst the pining and longing in this book isn’t particularly angsty, it’s instantly tension on level 10/10. The flirty banter and feelings that never went away are palpable from the first page they meet again. The air around those two is constantly charged with longing and sexual tension.

But they didn’t break up for no reason, so it’s also old fights heating up again. But those two have grown older and wiser and it’s beautiful to see them work on the problems they had in the past and not being willing to let the same thing separate them again.

The problem many have with second chance romance is… they did break up. Why am I supposed to believe as a reader, that it’s happy ending now? The author did a phenomenal job portraying both of their character developments. They realize they needed that break to grow as people and be stronger together now.

Their romance was beautiful to read about. It’s feelings and emotions and healthy communication. It’s soulmates meeting again and not being willing to loose each other a second time.

And alongside that pure love blossoming again, you get woman surfer action. Female empowerment. Their fight to get recognized as athletes and not only nice bodies to look at. Serena doesn’t shut up about problems and uses her platform to bringing attention to things like sexism and discrimination in the surfer world.

Overall a highly enjoyable read with captivating writing and an exciting story! I haven’t read any book by Kathryn Nolan before, but im definitely going to check out some now! She knows what she’s doing as an author!

Out of the Blue will go down in Kathryn Nolan history as one of my all time favorites! It has a ton of AMAZING elements I love most- second chance love, a heroine so strong she’s worthy of the role, familial binds born not-of-blood, and all kinds of values born from Kathryn herself exploding through the story. It’s romantic, it’s exciting, it’s steamy, is sad, and ultimately it’s perfect.
