Great world building did sort of expect the ending though. There was a plot twist in the beginning that I would have never expected.
Graphic: Alcoholism, Body horror, Confinement, Death, Gore, Blood, Medical content, Kidnapping, Grief, Death of parent, Murder, and Injury/Injury detail
Minor: Child abuse and Child death

Not a bad fantasy to start off the year with! I think Kemmerer really excels at writing character, and that's on display in this book. Tessa and Corrick both have great voices and their chemistry comes through nicely on the page. There is also a decent cast of side characters that really help to pull you into the story.
The plot is engaging enough to make you invested in the story. While the elements don't necessarily go outside of what you would consider a typical YA fantasy novel, the pacing was well done and the book didn't really seem to drag at any point. I'd actually recommend the audiobook because I think both of the narrators do a nice job bringing the characters to life.
Am I invested enough to read book two? I guess we'll see when it comes out! Lately it seems like I've been starting fantasy series and not following up with them.

I received an ARC of Defy the Night from Netgalley in exchange for an honest review.
Defy the Night is a dual perspective fantasy story. A deadly fever has broken out in Kandala. Tessa and a masked man named Wes smuggle medicine from the upper class citizens to the poor working class who can’t afford it on their own. Meanwhile, the king’s younger brother Corrick is viciously protect the kingdom by any means necessary.
This story was very slow until a quarter of the way through. I enjoyed all the characters, but the story of a fever and class war hit way too close to home. This book was intense!
