Maya Angelou has a way with words.
This memoir wasn't what I expected but the writing is very poetic, rhythmic and interesting.

I'm not sure why it took me 27 years to read this gem! I cried, I laughed, I was angry, I saw my family and friends. This book is such an important piece of literature for every American. The history and morality overwhelms and comforts the reader. Maya Angelou was a brilliant strong black woman and I can't wait to read more of her works.

This was extremely fascinating, and as I listened to it in the car I was interested in Maya's story of her childhood and those formative years. I think my problem with the book had to do more with how she read it than the story itself...which I feel bad saying about the wonderful Maya Angelou! Anyway, I would recommend this book, but read it, don't listen to it.

It took a little while for me to get used to the writing and actually interested in the story, but within a hundred pages it REALLY captured my attention. Her writing is beautiful and descriptive and painfully aware of how her younger self perceived the situation of her birth and life. However, the last few chapters come off awkward as it strays from the usual pacing, but considering she had more autobots it makes sense.
